This week during Reader's Workshop, we are working on using pictures and diagrams to aide with comprehension. We will be practicing this skill both with fiction and non-fiction text. Make sure your child is paying special attention to pictures and diagrams as they read, or you read to them, since they can add so much to the text.
We have been talking about symbols, and which symbols represent the USA. The bald eagle is our country's bird because it is big and strong just like our Country. The bald eagle's wingspan can be up to 8 feet across! That's the same as two kids. The flag symbolizes freedom. But did you know that each color on the flag is also a symbol? Red = Courage White = Making good choices Blue = Justice What are some other symbols that represent the USA?
Room 18 is ready to open for business tomorrow morning. I'm looking forward to meeting the new crew!
Cloud has been teaching us how to calm down when we are upset. Here are a few of the strategies we are working on:
Walk away Take deep breaths Slowly count to 10 Get a drink of water Kindergartners are discussing the importance of calming down before using hurtful words. Sometimes it is best to walk away, calm down, and then try and solve the conflict with our friends. The 100th day of kindergarten is Tuesday, February 4th.
Students are invited to bring in a collection of 100 items. Collections should be small items that can fit in totes. Examples of a small collection include, but is not limited to: 1. Legos 2. Paperclips 3. Hair bands 4. Cheerios 5. Stickers Collections can come to school as the students finish, but no later than the 4th. Happy collecting! Recently, the Kimochis have been teaching students about using a friendly talking voice instead of a fighting voice to solve conflict. We have discussed how friends are more likely to listen, and be open to finding a solution, when we use our talking voices. Make sure to reinforce talking voices at home.
We've been reading different variations of "The Mitten." Can your student retell the story? Ask them what is the same about each book and what is different.
Students have been working on writing Halloween pattern books. After publishing their very first Writer's Workshop stories, the authors shared their writing with friends. Congratulations on a job well done, Authors! |
