Mrs. Branciforte's First Graders |
|
Today students visited Mrs. Cahill in our school library and checked out library books for the first time.
You can support our school library by purchasing a birthday book for your child. Ms. Johnson will be giving us Kimochi challenges throughout the year at community time. Here's our first challenge. Ask your student if they are working on the challenge. What are the names of the new friends or grown-ups they've met?
Reed teachers surprised the students with a choreographed dance number at our last community time. CGI stands for cognitively guided instruction. This is a way of teaching a math story, where kids use their natural math ability to determine a solution by using a strategy that works best for them. In our classroom, there are usually three sets of numbers that students may choose from. These numbers are "good-fit" numbers like "good-fit" books in reader's workshop. Students work independently on a CGI problem using their chosen numbers. Then, some brave students share their work and strategies with the class. The result, is a great discussion on mathematical practices.
Try this challenge problem with your student. There were ____ chocolate hearts on the desk. My teacher said ____ of us could share the hearts equally. How many hearts did we each get? (24, 6) (48, 8) (12, 3) Today we started having a feeling of the day. Students talked about what excited is and a time when they were excited. We also talked about how sometimes when we are excited, we may forget the rules or we may forget to use self-control. Students shared strategies they use to help them calm down and regain control.
Talk with your student about their calm down strategy. Today the black group treated us to a performance of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. Nice work actors on a job well done. |
