CGI stands for cognitively guided instruction. This is a way of teaching a math story, where kids use their natural math ability to determine a solution by using a strategy that works best for them. In our classroom, there are usually three sets of numbers that students may choose from. These numbers are "good-fit" numbers like "good-fit" books in reader's workshop. Students work independently on a CGI problem using their chosen numbers. Then, some brave students share their work and strategies with the class. The result, is a great discussion on mathematical practices.
